AREQUIPA, PERU - ARICA, CHILE
A farewell to Peru on a very rough two hour prime
through the Andean back country. A river has to
be crossed. The water comes from melting glaciers
and it's quite deep, but almost everyone makes it.
A late lunch is had in Tacna, very close to the southern
border. Excellent seafood stew and ceviche with beer
all for under a dollar a person as the Inti has now
collapsed to 400 to the dollar. In other words, the same
meal would have been $5 a week ago. By 3 PM all the
cars had assembled for the crossing. The TV crews
on the other side were looking forward to the photo op
of us all crossing at once.
